  4. They are then spun to produce linen thread
  5. that can be woven into textiles ranging from
  6. sailcloth, canvas, and sacking to cambric,
  7. lawn, and lace. Used by the ancient
  8. Egyptians, linen was introduced by the Romans
  9. to northern Europe, where production became
  10. widespread. Religious refugees from the Low
  11. Countries in the 16th century helped to
  12. establish the linen industry in England, but
  13. here and elsewhere it began to decline in
  14. competition with cotton in the 18th century.
